The day has finally arrived. Nominet, the UK domain governing body, has released the .uk domain extension (top level domain) for registration. This new TLD looks to be the ideal one for any UK individual, company or organisation and will likely become the most used, overtaking the .co.uk eventually.

There are a few things you need to know, though…

• The new TLD will only be available to owners of .co.uk domains. So, if you have site-street.co.uk (sorry, we do!) then you can register site-street.uk. But if you don’t, you can’t.
• The restriction will be there for 5 years.
• If there isn’t a domain at .co.uk (or .org.uk) then you should be able to register a .uk domain.
• You can find out if the domain you want is limited to another domain owner here.
• .UK domains are £15 for one year or £25 for two years.
